Life is (still) unfair, but at least we’ve got more Malcolm in the Middle to soothe the pain. The first teaser trailer for the Malcolm in the Middle reboot has arrived, reuniting brainiac Malcolm (Frankie Muniz) with his chaotic family... seemingly against his will.
The teaser for the four-episode event, subtitled Life’s Still Unfair, a nod to the show’s theme song, They Might Be Giants’ “Boss of Me,” opens with Malcolm telling the audience how “fantastic” his life is now. “All I had to do is stay away from my family,” he adds.
Unfortunately, Malcolm’s joy (as always) is short-lived, because Malcolm’s family finally finds him — and so does the dysfunctional mess Malcolm swore he got away from.
“You can’t spend the rest of your life hiding and denying your family even exists,” Malcolm’s girlfriend, Tristan (Fear Street actress Kiana Madeira), tells him in the trailer.
“Worked perfectly till they showed up,” he retorts.
The family Malcolm reunites with includes mom Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), father Hal (Bryan Cranston) and two of Malcolm’s brothers — Reese (Justin Berfield) and Francis (Christopher Masterson). Erik Per Sullivan, who plays Malcolm’s youngest brother, Dewey, in the original series, will not return as he has reportedly retired from acting. His character, who is not seen in the teaser, will be played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.
The official synopsis for the show hints at what brings Malcolm back into the fold. “After shielding himself and his daughter from his family for over a decade, Malcolm is dragged back into their orbit when Hal and Lois demand his presence at their 40th anniversary party.” Malcolm’s daughter is played by Keeley Karsten.
Cranston, who is now best known for his multiple Emmy-winning role on Breaking Bad, previously spoke to David Spade and Dana Carvey’s Fly on the Wall podcast about what it was like to reunite with his former family. “It’s amazing how these boys — who were my boys on that show — are now around the same age I was when we first started,” Cranston said on the June episode. “They’ve got children of their own.”
Muniz, who is now a NASCAR race car driver, told People recently, “It was the first time in my entire life that, when I was done filming the reboot, I was happy to call myself an actor.”
He added, “It was just really fun and a really cool experience, so I’m hoping that everyone loves it for sure.”
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair streams on Hulu on Disney+ on April 10, 2026.
